The Phase of Women¡¯s Sport-for-All Participation in Korea


Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the phase of women¡¯s Sport-for-All participation in Korea by analyzing the results of "National Survey on Sport-for-All", which has been conducted 7 times from 1985 to 2006 For this study, the data were collected by the sample and results of "National Survey on Sport-for-All". Variables used in this study were 1) Rate of women¡¯s sports participation, 2) Frequency and intensity of women¡¯s sports participation, 3) Women¡¯s participating sport activity items, 4) Motivation and constraints of women¡¯s sports participation. To analyze the data, frequency and % were computed into male, female, and housewives, combining them into a total showing the annual changes. The major findings of this study were as follows; First, the rate of women¡¯s participation on Sport-for-All showed dramatically increasing phase. This aspect, even lower than men, had increased from 2000. Second, the rate of women¡¯s complete non-participation on Sport-for-All decreased and the frequency and intensity of participation on Sport-for-All increased. The rate of women¡¯s participation in sport clubs however, represented very lower aspects than men¡¯s. Third, jogging, stretching, mountain climbing, and badminton stand for the favorite sport items of women¡¯s participation on Sport-for-All. And some sports that the women desired to join were listed such as swimming, tennis, and weight training. Fourth, main reasons of the women¡¯s participation on Sport-for-All were revealed of health promotion and weight control. And the cause of non-participation displayed in deficiency of time and laziness.
